VMLY&R is looking for an experienced Verbal Design Director of Brand Identity to help lead multidisciplinary teams. They help craft, establish and manage brand identity as it relates to all things written and said allowed. This includes overseeing naming, nomenclature, brand story, tone of voice, personality, positioning and verbal identity vision standards and vision for our clients, guiding work from its conceptual ideation through full implementation and ongoing brand identity management.

This isn't a normal advertising writer position, but one focused specifically on brand identity verbal systems as it relates to the Practice of the Brand ID & Design Studio at VMLY&R. The verbal design director can create and deliver sound strategy, write in and establish any tone of voice, and think about language and words within the context of branding our clients products and business across b2b and b2c industries. They should be equally psyched about naming a new spirit, creating tone of voice for a health care start up, or developing messaging for a global silicon manufacturing giant.

At a director level, the Verbal Design Director will manage juniors on the team, work with leads across the agency disciplines as well as collaborating, strategizing, crafting, presenting and managing our brand identity workstreams hand in hand with our client partners.

They also play strong leadership roles, leading teams through projects and regularly presenting work to clients.

Responsibilities
  • Sets verbal brand vision for projects, briefs and inputs into the direction the brand ID practice
  • Presents work to clients and agency leadership with confidence
  • Manages, designs and crafts identity projects of all kinds, from naming to tone of voice to full verbal brand identity systems
  • Leads projects through breakthrough conceptual generation and flawless delivery
  • Leads teams at a project level, guiding the work of juniors, and communicating clearly to peers
  • Highly engaged member of pitch efforts
  • Establishes client relationships and manages multiple projects
  • Identifies trends and pushes towards industry leading solutions
  • Thinks strategically about how a brand speaks and creating tools for clients that help them execute verbal strategies in flexible ways across large organizations.

Required Experience
  • Team leadership
  • Brand identity design and verbal language systems
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills
  • Strong presentation skills and experience
  • Strong understanding of marketing, advertising, and technology
  • 8+ years professional experience, with significant tenures at branding, design, advertising agency or equivalent
  • Bachelor's in Design or equivalent work experience preferred
